I've been working on this for almost a month now, between getting addicted in minecraft and a few road trips. I started with a simple idea, I was going to model the upper chest and a part of the shoulder just to get a portrait done, but then I began to do the lower parts to fill the frame and when I saw I was already at the wait, so I just kept on going. I know it would be better if I modeled each part separately but I didn't really begin this with a plan. There is still a lot of tunning to do on the details and some things to fix, but I'll texture it first so I can nail those spots. Rendered with mental ray.
Granted, I don't work with 3-d models, but I can tell that this is a very well done piece of work. It is very detail oriented, with little on the head, which makes sense: anyone could be wearing this, and kill a bunch of Zerglings while they're at it. But the thing that needs work is color and texture. Very rarely is there a spotless suit of CMC-whatever armor, and the lack of color only emphasises this. Another thing is that there are no other effects or decal on the armor; the lamps under the helmet and the exhaust pipes are proof of that. And the armor just seems sterile, lifeless. Yes, I know that this might only be a work in progress, but this has the potential of being mistaken for an ingame render and who knows; you might get hired by Blizzard to help design units.
Wow! I was browsing a list of artist a friend sended me and I have to say that your design was the only one that made me want to stare at it for a while, this is definitely a Master Piece! Well done!
